Mull Expedition 9th to 17th April 2024

Vectis Expeditions continued its expeditions in searching for remnant populations of native flat oysters with an early season diving expedition to Mull incorporating a BSAC Underwater Surveyor course practicals.

Following on the success of last years expedition, a plan was hatched to circumnavigate the isle of Mull clockwise, exploring a range of known and unknown sites along the way, including in particular potential sites where native flat oysters might be found.

Sadly the weather didn’t permit this and we reverted to Plan B which was the Sound of Mull area visiting some of Scotland’s famous big wreck dives and revisiting a number of old sites on the way and conducting surveys as part of the BSAC Underwater Surveyor Course.

We welcomed on board Craig Burton (a fellow diver, coastguard and shellfish expert) and Richard Land (an expert on lobster and oyster hatcheries) as guest speakers to educate us on various aspects of native oyster restoration.

It was also great to have on board  Káťa Opuntia as our resident photographer for the week.  Watch the video below to see some her great stills!

Thanks to Bob, Tash and Craig and Káťa from team Clasina, the dive team Paul V, Eddie, Tiago, Andy K, Ian, Paul S, Vivien, Dan, James and our guest speakers Richard and Craig for a great week despite the awesome but challenging weather!
